A Bit of History

Although not formed as a record label until 2007, the folks at Quest Records have been involved in the Canadian music scene promoting, presenting and performing in live shows since the late 1960‘s. It was through this involvement that we found the opportunity to record some of the performers we had worked with over the years. Recognizing that there were several significant artists important to the cultural fabric of the city, who had spent their careers performing around Vancouver for benefits and community fundraisers; and who may have appeared on other artists recordings, but did not have a legacy recording of their own... To fill this gap, Quest Records was formed as a ‘philanthropic legacy label’, wherein the artists could retain all of their publishing rights.

The record company began with a re-issue of Dalannah Gail Bowen’s jazz influenced “I Just Want To Talk To You” in late 2007 and that CD was followed in early 2008 by Dalannah’s most successful release to date, “Mamma’s Got The Blues”. In 2009 Jim Foster and Paul Hovan traveled to Ojai, California and the Mastering Lab, to put the finishing touches on Jim’s new album "Lone Bird”. In the fall of 2009, Quest released new singles from Jim Foster and Dalannah Gail Bowen.

In January 2010 Dalannah and her band Straight Up performed at the Maple Blues Festival in Toronto, Ontario gathering new fans in the east before dropping in on Winnipeg for a dramatic performance at The Forks, celebrating National Aboriginal Day. Our 2010 release schedule included new material from Dalannah Gail Bowen as well as the long anticipated release from Jim Foster, Lone Bird”.

In October 2011, Quest released a limited edition version of Robbie Steininger’s first solo CD. This primarily instrumental album saw a wider release in the summer of 2012. In late 2011 Dalannah finished her recording sessions with Steve Dawson and delivered an album with several new original tunes. The CD titled, “Them Menz” featured several original songs by Dalannah and was released in the fall of 2012.

In early 2013, Quest released Jim Foster’s “A Sailor’s Advice”, a series of songs recorded on his smart phone. Comprised of single take live recordings, the songs had a vibrancy not often captured with a recording.

Fast forward to Fall of 2014 and Dalannah teams up with bassist Owen Veber and records "Been Around a While", one of the most unique Blues albums to be released in years. Performing as a Bass and Vocal duo Dalannah and Owen tour throughout the year in Canada and the US. The CD gets a second printing in the summer of 2015 and at years' end is selected by Downbeat magazine as one of the best Blues albums of 2015.

Jim Foster also released a new CD in early 2015; titled 6 Foot Ladder. The CD featured the single, Radio On which received airplay in both the the US and Canada.

The past few years have seen changes in direction, location and presentation for Quest artists. Jim Foster has left the city behind for a less crowded location but continues to hit the road, regularly taking his music to his fans. Robbie has taken some time away from music to concentrate on his family while Dalannah is finally taking some time away from her volunteer and social activist roles to return to the recording studio.

Dalannah’s new project —  Looking Back — has been completed thanks in part to a grant from Creative BC and Amplify BC that has allowed Dalannah the financial freedom to invite many of the musicians and singers she has performed with over the years to join her on this predominantly self-penned retrospective. In addition to recording the album this summer, Dalannah also stepped in front of the camera to perform her first scripted music video for "Somebody's Watchin' You"  the first single released from the album. You can watch the video on Quest Records YouTube Page and here. The CD yielded two additional videos: What The Hell Is That? and "Look Ahead."

Speaking of Look Ahead... as we move forward beyond the COVID pandemic, Quest will continue to support music and musicians... Stay Tuned!
